Entry-Level Education

Mastectomy Fitter

Required Education

To be eligible to take the mastectomy fitter certification exam, an applicant must demonstrate successful completion (within the last five years) of an entry-level education course through a fitter school or education provider.

AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF BREAST CARE PROFESSIONALS (AABCP)

Focuses on national advocacy for post-mastectomy professionals as the only post-mastectomy association in the U.S.

AMERICAN BREAST CARE (ABC)

Offers mastectomy training programs for ABC-manufactured post-mastectomy products.

AMOENA

Manufactures products for post-breast surgery care, including prostheses, bras, and post-surgical products.

ANITA

Manufactures breast prosthetics and teaches the art and science of fitting post-mastectomy survivors.

BFRIN (BEING FITTED RIGHT IS NECESSARY)

Focuses on post-mastectomy care and education for medical professionals and breast cancer survivors.

CFS ALLIED HEALTH EDUCATION, LLC

Provides entry-level mastectomy fitter education courses and continuing education opportunities.

JODEE

Provides a large selection of post-mastectomy bras and educates patients on bra fitting.

NEARLY ME TECHNOLOGIES, INC.

Focuses on women’s health care by offering U.S. made products for mastectomies around the world.

O&P EDUCATION

Offers entry-level courses on the scope of care provided by certified orthotic fitters and certified mastectomy fitters. Part of the course is available online.

OKLAHOMA STATE UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY (OSUIT)

Teaches students about the design, fabrication, and fitting of prosthetics and orthopedic devices.

ST. PETERSBURG COLLEGE

Offers O&P training and is the largest provider of continuing education for healthcare professionals among all Florida state colleges.

TRULIFE

Specializes in the development, manufacturing, and education of products relating to breast care, orthopedics, prosthetics, and pressure care.

Required Patient Care Experience

A candidate will have a minimum of 120 hours (three weeks of full-time work) of documented patient care under the supervision of an appropriately qualified professional (another mastectomy fitter or a professional with the mastectomy fitter scope within his/her own scope of practice). Documentation should be maintained and kept readily available for auditing purposes.  Suggestions for obtaining patient care requirements include:

  • volunteering at your local hospital or clinic
  • contacting local suppliers in your area
  • bringing a mastectomy fitter into your facility

 

Orthotic Fitter

Required Education

To be eligible to take the orthotic fitter certification exam, an applicant is required to demonstrate successful completion (within the last five years) of an entry-level course through a fitter school or education provider.

Provides virtual, entry-level orthotic fitter education courses.

O&P EDUCATION

Offers entry-level courses on the scope of care provided by certified orthotic fitters and certified mastectomy fitters.

ST. PETERSBURG COLLEGE (TRULIFE ORTHOTIC FITTER’S COURSE)

Offers O&P training and is the largest provider of continuing education for healthcare professionals among Florida state colleges.

SPOKANE FALLS COMMUNITY COLLEGE (SFCC)

Offers orthotic fitter and mastectomy fitter pre-certification and CE courses through its O&P Technology Program.

Required Patient Care Experience

A candidate will have a minimum of 1,000 hours (25 weeks of full-time work) of documented patient care under the supervision of an appropriately qualified professional (another orthotic fitter or a professional with the orthotic fitter scope within his/her own scope of practice). For auditing purposes, documentation should be maintained and kept readily available. Suggestions for obtaining patient care requirements include:

  • contacting local suppliers in your area
  • bringing an orthotic fitter into your facility

 

Certified Durable Medical Equipment Specialist

Required Education

To be eligible to take the DME certification exam, an applicant must have a high school diploma or equivalent.

Required Experience

An eligible candidate will have a verifiable minimum of 500 hours (approximately 13 weeks of full-time work) of documented experience at a DME facility. For auditing purposes, candidates should maintain and keep readily available attestation from a supervisor.
