BOC’s test development committees are an essential part of maintaining the high quality of our certification programs. BOC tests are developed based on 5-year practice analyses. However, we realize that major changes can occur between analyses. Our committee members are critical in helping us maintain up-to-date questions. Items for the multiple choice examination and cases for the clinical simulation examination are developed by volunteer content experts. The committees meet via web conference four times per year, following each exam period. You also meet in-person once annually, the cost of which is covered by BOC. The time commitment for committee members is approximately 30 to 50 hours per year, for which they earn 15 continuing education credits. Responsibilities of the certification exam committee include:
- Acting as an item writer
- Conducting item review and revising new draft items for wording, matching test specifications, and answer key discrepancies
- Approving final items for the exams and for the item banks after revision process is completed
- Overseeing and reviewing test construction for the exams
- Reviewing an online version of the draft test
- Participating in an item analysis to review item statistics following each exam administration
